Cardio Care & Diabetes

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States, and it has no cure. The total annual cost of diabetes in 2002 was estimated to be $132 billion, or one out of every 10 dollars spent for health care in the United States . Moreover, a survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2002 revealed that 6.3% of the American population suffer from diabetes (21.1% out of the adult population), and there are 1.3 million new reported cases (above the age of 20) each year.
Diabetes mellitus is a group of chronic (lasting a lifetime) metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels, which result from defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both.
Blood glucose (BG) is the main source of energy for the cells in the body. Normally, BG levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, which mediates glucose absorption into the cells. When the blood glucose levels elevates (for example, after eating food), insulin is released from the pancreas and normalizes the glucose level.
Patients suffering from diabetes mellitus are classified according to the treatment as type-1 or type-2. Type-2 is the common form of diabetes (90-95%), which results mainly from insulin resistance, i.e. lack of cellular sensitivity to insulin-facilitated glucose intake.

Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases

According to the CDC2, in the States, 5 million people above 35 who suffer from diabetes reported that they were diagnosed with a cardiovascular disorder (CVD) in 2002. Large-scale clinical and epidemiological studies indicate that diabetes increases the risk of developing CVD by 2 to 6 times ,  and that about 85% of all type-2 diabetes patients will die of an atherosclerotic event . Importantly, the plasma lipoprotein profile may be most critical to diabetics     , because at any total cholesterol level, diabetic individuals have a cardiovascular mortality rate that is 3- to 5 times higher than non-diabetics. Therefore, diabetes patients are obligated to take care of their heart health in order to avoid these devastating CVD risks.
A major characteristic of the dyslipidemia of type-2 diabetes is hypertriglyceridemia (which is 2-3 times higher than non-diabetic), reflecting increased levels of VLDL-derived triglycerides     . Numerous studies have shown that oxidative stress is associated with type-2 diabetes, and there is compelling biochemical evidence that suggests it may even play a role in the pathogenesis of type-2 diabetes . The outcomes of the combined hyperglycemia and oxidative stress lead to deleterious effects, such as endothelial dysfunction , which in turn trigger the arteriosclerosis process.

Diabetes and Cognitive Decline

Several studies conducted on humans have shown that type-2 diabetes increases the risk of dementia. Cognitive decline is an intermediate stage between normal aging and dementia . Since dementia may be most effectively delayed in its initial stages, identifying diabetes as a modifiable risk factor for early cognitive decline could be of major importance. Many researchers have examined diabetes in relation to early cognitive decline, and found that the relation is stronger in the diabetics population than in the non-diabetics. Recently, a large prospective study  focused on elderly women with type-2 diabetes describes increased odds of poor cognitive function and substantial cognitive decline in these patients, especially in the non-treated patients.
Current Diabetes Management
Diabetes can affect many parts of the body and can lead to serious complications such as cardiovascular diseases, blindness, kidney damage, cognitive decline and lower-limb amputations. It is possible to reduce the occurrence of these complications by controlling the levels of blood glucose, blood pressure, and blood lipids.
Diet, exercise, weight loss, oral medication and insulin are the cornerstones of the treatment for diabetic patients. The current approach of treating      patients with type-2 diabetes is maintaining normal BG and lipid profile, mainly cholesterol levels, and managing blood pressure. But what about preventing other major risks of diabetes, like CVD and cognitive decline? Indeed, managing blood pressure and improved control of blood lipids are necessary in preventing those complications, but the recommended diet does not supply healthy solution in this respect.
Recent evidence shows that dietary supplementation with fish oil, containing EPA and DHA     , can prevent symptoms associated with diabetic neuropathy. This was further correlated in a recent report  that presented evidence for a marked neuro-protective effect of DHA on diabetic neuropathy. Additionally, several reports described the beneficial effects of Omega-3 fatty acids supplementation derived of fish oil, which may decrease the rate of occurrence of vascular complications in diabetics and enhancement of enzymes and enzymatic processes.

In order to function, your heart needs a steady supply of oxygen-rich blood, which flows through the heart’s blood vessels (coronary arteries) to the heart muscle. Coronary heart disease is the term used to describe conditions that happen when this supply is blocked or interrupted.
If the coronary arteries become partially blocked, the patient may experience chests pains called angina. If the arteries become completely blocked, the patient will have a myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. Heart attack can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle, and can sometimes be fatal if immediate treatment is not given.
The most common way that coronary heart disease occurs is when the coronary arteries become blocked by a build up of fatty deposits (cholesterol). The deposits form plaque which narrows the arteries. This narrowing of the arteries is called arteriosclerosis.
Cholesterol is a fatty substance made from the saturated fat that you eat. It is essential for healthy cells. Lipoproteins carry cholesterol around the body, through the blood stream. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) take cholesterol from the liver to the cells, and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) carry excess and unneeded cholesterol back to the liver.
LDL cholesterol tends to build up on the walls of the arteries. If your level of LDL cholesterol is too high, the HDL will not be able to remove it sufficiently and you will be at risk of developing coronary heart disease.
The key to preventing coronary heart disease is to make sure that your LDL cholesterol level is low and your HDL cholesterol is high.
Atherosclerotic processes, which results in built-up of fatty plaque material in inner layer of blood vessel, underlie over 85% of all cardiovascular disorders.

Closer to Mother's Milk - the Best Option

Balanced nutrition during the first months is crucial for the baby's proper physical and cognitive development.

Breast feeding is the ideal nutritional solution for infants. However, this solution is sometimes not available for a variety of reasons. The infant nutrition industry offers a wide range of nutritional solutions that mimic mother's breast milk.
One of the most pronounced differences between mother’s breast milk and infant formulas is in the fat composition. Vegetable oils and fats, which are normally used in infant nutrition have different composition, which results in a loss of essential calcium and energy.  It may also create digestion problems and limited intake of other esential nutrients.

Other nutrients present in human breast milk are phospholipids, which play a crucial role in the development of the infant's brain and other essential tissues.

Nutrition of Toddlers and Young Children

Toddlers and young children are at an important stage of their life in terms of bone, skeleton and brain development.

Many food products designed for toddlers and young children, such as biscuits, mashed food cereals, dairy products etc. are based on saturated fats. Ingestion of saturated fats, which are totally different from the characteristics and composition of human breast milk fat, results in loss of calcium and energy.

Other essential nutrients hardly found in baby's foods and present in human breast milk are phospholipids, which play a crucial role in the development of the brain and other essential tissues.

Human Brest Milk and Infant Formulas

One of the most pronounced differences between mother’s milk and infant formulas is in the fat composition. In mother’s milk, most of the saturated fatty acids are located at the sn-2 position of the triglycerides while the sn-1,3 positions are mainly occupied with unsaturated fatty acids.  This unique composition and structure ensures optimal intake of crucial calcium and energy.  However, most infant formulas do not contain such composition and the result is loss of crucial Calcium and energy (in the form of Palmitic acid) by the infants.

Optimal Absorption of Infants
Three important parameters need to be combined in order to ensure optimal absorption by the infant, as is the case in human milk:
  1. The total amount of palmitic acid
  2. The amount of palmitic acid at the sn-2 position
  3. The amount of oleic acid.
InFatTM's fatty acids unique composition provides the infant with the closest to optimum fat composition. InFatTM's fatty acids unique composition consists of 18-30% Palmitic acid of the total fatty acids (of which about 40-70% are located at the sn-2 position), and more than 50% of the fatty acids are unsaturated fatty acids (oleic and linoleic acids), mainly located at the sn-1,3 positions.

In contrast, palmitic acid present in vegetable oils, which are commonly used in the manufacture of infant formulas, is esterified to the sn-1 and sn-3 positions while the sn-2 position is predominantly occupied by unsaturated fatty acids.

Calcium absorption
Palmitic acid esterified at sn-1 and 3 positions of the glycerol backbone, as is the case in most infant formulas, was shown to be poorly absorbed and secreted into feces as insoluble calcium soaps, leading to loss of both fatty acids (energy) and calcium.

The combination of the right amount of total palmitic acid with the high percentage of that Palmitic acid at the sn-2 position together with very high levels of Oleic acid makes InFat a superior product over other commercial products.

Boosting Brain Health with High Grade PS

[02,2005]  Enzymotec expands its phosphatidylserine product line –Sharp●PS™, by introducing highly concentrated PS grades of PS70 and PS90.

Enzymotec's R&D team developed a new production method that enables manufacturing of high grade PS: PS70 and PS90, in addition to other extensive products in its Sharp●PS™ line. These new grades are produced under high quality standards and comply with current GMO free European regulations.

"The new grades are most suitable as bulk active for dietary supplements, functional food and pharmaceutical applications," says Dorit Plat, PhD, R&D manager at Enzymotec. "Sharp●PS™ high grades provide manufacturers a wide range of PS solutions such as manufacturing significantly smaller capsules by using small bulk volume with the same RDA amount. It answers the consumers' need for smaller capsules size without compromising on the required RDA. Moreover, the high grades enable increasing the PS amount in the capsules without changing the capsules size and create stronger formulation of PS for better cognitive performance. Indeed, formulating products with high PS grades ensures the producer gains a competitive edge in the market."

Sharp●PS™ premium grade, PS90, is also suitable for pharmaceutical applications. All PS grades are highly stable, easily tableted and have long shelf life. The new grades are available in powder form and characterized by excellent flowability and color.

Phosphatidylserine, a natural phospholipids nutrient, is active in cell membranes and is the major acidic phospholipid in animal brain membranes. Phosphatidylserine has been clinically proven as beneficial for memory loss conditions, cognitive performance, improving mood and learning abilities.

Enzymotec announces a novel DHA delivery systems to prevent cognitive decline

Recently, Enzymotec together with Prof. Inna Weiner, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Tel Aviv University, presented a clinical study showing a significant effect on the cognitive performance in elderly rat model generated by using a superior lipid-based delivery systems for DHA.

DHA has been known to be one of the prominent building-blocks of our brain cells' membrane. However, common treatment of cognitive impairment with DHA provides only a marginal effect. One of the reasons lies in its relatively poor bioavailability to the cerebral tissues.
In this study, using the chemical agent scopolamine, which accelerates the processes of cognitive aging, by inducing amnesia, impaired the cognitive abilities of middle-aged rats. Several groups of rats were fed with traditional sources of DHA while others received novel lipid-based delivery platforms carrying DHA.
“We were able to demonstrate that simple DHA derivatives, such as fish oil, could not attenuate scopolamine's rapid aging effect.  Contrary to that, our DHA delivery systems provide a more effective protection from this substance. Interestingly, the effect was induced while using only one third of the active ingredient concentration, compared to previous publications,” says Dr. Dori Pelled, Director of Clinical Studies at Enzymotec. “In fact, our new DHA delivery systems empower DHA by increasing its bioavailability to the brain and by performing synergistically with its carrier. Thus, a significant improvement in various cognitive and behavioral patterns such as memory, learning and mood is achieved.”
Brain and cognitive health are main fields for Enzymotec's strategy. the company have already started to conduct a human clinical trial, which is based on these results and intend to conduct an additional human trial with a different target group shortly.

Says Dr. Ariel Katz, Enzymotec’s CEO: "Seniors often experience a progressive decline in cognitive function. It typically begins with short-term memory loss and a decrease in the ability to learn new information. Simple memory deficits, if not addressed, could deteriorate over time.
Our new delivery systems can now offer a better way to reverse the aging effects ".

In the last year, in the field of cognitive health, Enzymotec has developed a supreme phosphatidylserine (PS) product line: SharpPS, an exclusive grade of high quality PS for brain health; OmegaPS, which combines PS with omega-3. Recently, Enzymotec also developed high grade lecithin and PS which meet current European GMO-free standards.

Enzymotec offers high grade lecithin and PS IP certified

Recently Enzymotec developed high grade lecithin and PS (phosphatidylserine) which are under current European GMO-free Standards (IP). Enzymotec will be introducing both products in the coming HI-Europe at  booth # L5.

While the regulatory environment in Europe has changed, and the growing awareness of consumers and retailers for full traceability of GMO contaminants become visible, Enzymotec, like other major PS suppliers, was until recently unable to offer large quantities of IP-certified PS due to difficulties in sourcing sufficient quantities of raw material.

In response to the growing demand in the  European market, Enzymotec’s scientists were able to design a unique process that enables the production of high grades IP lecithin and PS in a single phase.

Enzymotec will feature at the coming HI Europe its Sharp and Focus brands and other phospholipids derivatives like: LysoPC, under novel IP standards.
PS is a natural compound of lecithin and serine amino acid that is found at high concentrations in the brain. It is a natural brain nutrient, which improves cognitive function and enhances various brain activities in all age groups. The benefits of PS have been scientifically proven in numerous clinical studies. It repairs and maintains brain tissues and neurons, improves memory impairment, concentration and short term memory. The FDA ruled that PS may reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction and  may reduce the risk of dementia in elderly.

Enzymotec announces: enzymatic tool breakthrough

Enzymotec announces a breakthrough technology following 3 years of research together with Prof. Yuval Shoham at Technion Institute, Israel.   The technology called “Lipase-II” is a patented enzyme technology that can specifically substitute the fatty acid, which is located on the second position (Sn-2) of the triglyceride.

“Lipase enzymes are necessary for the absorption and digestion of lipids in the guts. Therefore, they are responsible for breaking down lipids (fats), in particular triglycerides. “ Explains Prof. Yuval Shoham, Head of Food Engineering and Biotechnology at Technion Institute.
“All other known lipases can build or break down only 1 and 3 positions (Sn-), while the human metabolism uses the bounded 2nd position as a building block for other essential elements.”  Concludes Prof. Shoham.

Dr Ariel Katz, Enzymotec’s CEO: “The potential of Lipase- II lies in the ability to deliver superior nutritional and therapeutic benefits, while using basic fat or oil as carriers.  Thus, it can create a totally new category of functional foods, beverages or supplements. We believe that the combination of Lipase-II and our core technology, AMIET, will yield a strong impact on the whole health and wellness sectors.

In recent years, few research groups had tried to identify Sn-2-specific enzymes, but Enzymotec together with Prof. Yuval Shoham are the first group that succeeded to develop this technology.

A New Canadian human trial supports the wide-scope CVD benefits of CardiaBeatTM

Enzymotec announces a new human clinical trial that further supports CardiaBeat's heart-related benefits with superior effects on the body's total lipid profile.

Recently, a year and a half long clinical study has been concluded. It was conducted by Prof. Peter Jones at the Mary Emily Clinical Research Unit in McGill University, Canada. Initial results reveal that CardiaBeatTM shows significantly better results on the body's total lipid profile in comparison to other supplements in the market .

In this trial, the diets of healthy, moderately overweight volunteers with elevated serum lipid levels were supplemented with CardiaBeatTM and commercially available supplements. The objectives of the trial were tested using a randomised, single blind, cross-over clinical intervention. Bio-markers in the plasma, such as total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and total triglycerides levels, were monitored.

"Cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and obesity have one thing in common and this is the abnormal lipid profile found in the blood of people suffering from these disorders or prone to develop them", says Dr. Dori Pelled, Director of Clinical Research at Enzymotec. "Unfortunately, dietary intake of heart-related supplements, such as omega- 3 or phytosterols, provides only a limited solution".

The results of this study, however, show that CardiaBeatTM can simultaneously decrease the main risk factors associated with CVD such as high blood levels of LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides or high cholesterol/HDL ratio. "We see CardiaBeatTM as a new concept to the heart health related dietary supplements market, which we can describe as Total Lipid Management", concludes Dr. Pelled.

CardiaBeatTM, with its proprietary combination of natural active lipids, can also serve as a platform for other essential nutrients important for diabetes or CVD management. It can be applied in a variety of formulations and applications including dietary supplements, nutrition bars, and a variety of functional foods and beverages.

Enzymotec announces today the stretching of its nutraceuticals line for baby foods. The first ingredient in this line is InFat, a structured lipid that significantly improves calcium absorption and energy intake of newborns.

Enzymotec intends to expand its line of infant nutrition ingredients for toddlers of 1-3 years old. Since their first year onward, children start consuming various food applications, which are not necessarily infant formula-based.
Unfortunately, many of these products are not specifically designed to address their special needs. Food products for infants and babies are based on saturated fats, which create insoluble compounds with calcium during their digestion. These compounds reduce calcium absorption, cause constipation, and lead to a reduction in the available material that can be used as energy by the developing baby. Subsequently, unhealthy fats can slowdown the physical development and growth of babies and toddlers. Therefore, adding InFat to baby foods can eliminate these risks and encourage the development of babies and toddlers.

"We are confident that our advanced lipid technology and ability to incorporate other advanced lipid-based ingredients, such as omega-3, would allow us to create better health solutions for the development of infants, babies and toddlers, cost effectively. InFat is the first product that we launch into this category" concludes Dr. Katz, Enzymotec’s CEO.

Diabetics get full CVD protection with CardiaBeat Bar

Enzymotec Ltd. announces launching a new prototype of nutrition bar marketed under the brand carDiabeat. This functional bar is based on previous development of the active ingredients called carDiabeat. This bar is especially designed to answer the critical and unique heart-health needs of diabetics.

“Diabetics have an extremely high risk to develop cardiovascular diseases, which are related to their sensitive lipid and fat metabolism. The popular low-carb diets, commonly aimed at diabetics, totally ignore these specific needs of diabetes patients. Low-carb bars, in particular, are saturated with unhealthy fats in order to ensure good sensorial properties,” says Dr. Avidor Shulman, Director of Innovation at Enzymotec. “Our new approach is more focused on the acutic needs  of diabetes patients. Daily consumption of carDiabeat Bar can proactively fight diabetics’ abnormal fat metabolism, without compromising on good taste.”

The active ingredients of carDiabeat Bar simultaneously tackle the 3 major causes for diabetics’ CVD: prevention and control of oxidative stress, reducing total cholesterol and triglyceride levels; and inhibiting the atherosclerotic plaque formation cascade. It is based on a clinically proven and a proprietary combination of enzymatically derived natural lipids.
The active ingredients and recipe can be easily applied to a variety of bar applications such as low-carb bars and nutrition bars in various tastes.

CardiaBeatTM (formely MultOil) showes potential  health benefits at in vitro study

In vitro study implies that MultOil has a unique synergistic health effect to reduce the risk for coronary heart disease. The study was conducted by Prof. M. Aviram, head of the Lipid Research Laboratory, Technion Faculty of Medicine.

It showed that an olive-based MultOil (enriched with phytosterol-ester and DAG ) is significantly more potent than the combination of olive oil and phytosterol-esters in its ability to reduce macrophage peroxides content and macrophages superoxides release. The oxidation process of macrophages is a critical stage of the atherosclerotic plaque formation cascade.  Therefore, the decreased macrophage oxidative stress implies that MultOil can reduce the risk for coronary heart disease, through multiple pathways. Prof. M. Aviram assumes that the mechanism is associated with cellular signal transudation processes. “This is the first in a series of clinical studies, and the first step in proving the synergistic health effect. Indeed, the added health value of MultOil in comparison to other products in the market that claim to reduce the LDL, is obvious,” says Dr. Ariel Katz, Enzymotec’s CEO.
Phyotsterol-esters and DAG are well known to reduce the “bad” cholesterol and thus to reduce the risk for coronary heart disease. The FDA has recognized them as GRAS, and most importantly, products containing Phytosterol-Esters are allowed to be label as reducing the risk for coronary heart disease.
MultOil, recently launched by Enzymotec, is a line of multi-functional oils, based on natural oils enriched with 25% phytosterols and 15% DAG. It can be applied easily to the production process of any natural oil, salad dressing, spreads or energy bars.
MultOil is produced from a patented process called AMIET®, a breakthrough technology, developed by Enzymotec.

CardiaBeat - innovative heart solutions for diabetics

Enzymotec launches a new dietary concept that provides a triple cardiac defense for diabetes patients

Recently, Enzymotec Ltd. developed a novel product line marketed under the brand carDiabeat, designed especially to fight the major risks for cardiovascular disorders of diabetes patients.

Diabetes is a multiple metabolic disorder, characterized also by abnormal fat metabolism. Recent clinical evidence shows that the rates of heart disease deaths in diabetes patients are about 2 to 4 times higher than in adults without diabetes. Moreover, about 85% of deaths among people with diabetes are due to heart diseases and strokes. Therefore, diabetes patients are obliged to get better heart health solutions in order to avoid these risks.
carDiabeat simultaneously tackles the 3 major causes for CVD: prevention and control of oxidative stress, reducing total cholesterol and triglyceride levels; and inhibiting the atherosclerotic plaque formation cascade. It is based on a clinically proven and a proprietary combination of enzymatically derived natural lipids. These lipids includes DHA and EPA, in a unique delivery system that enhances their efficacy and bioavailability.

“The accepted approach for diabetics’ nutrition is always based on low-carb diets, while totally ignoring the heart health complications associated with diabetes” says Dr Ariel Katz, Enzymotec’s CEO. “Our ground breaking approach is to tackle diabetics’ heart health risks by providing a nutritional solution designed especially to meet their unique health needs and protects them from the serious implications of abnormal fat metabolism.”

carDiabeat can be easily applied to a variety of friendly day-to-day delivery applications such as capsules, tablets, liquid forms, nutrition bars or in functional foods such as dairy products, salad dressings, bakery products, etc.

A New Canadian human trial supports the wide-scope CVD benefits of CardiaBeat™

[01,2005]  Enzymotec announces a new human clinical trial that further supports CardiaBeat™'s heart-related benefits with superior effects on the body's total lipid profile.

Recently, a year and a half long clinical study has been concluded. It was conducted by Prof. Peter Jones at the Mary Emily Clinical Research Unit in McGill University, Canada. Initial results reveal that CardiaBeat™ shows significantly better results on the body's total lipid profile in comparison to other supplements in the market .

In this trial, the diets of healthy, moderately overweight volunteers with elevated serum lipid levels were supplemented with CardiaBeat™ and commercially available supplements.

The results of this study, however, show that CardiaBeat™ can simultaneously decrease the main risk factors associated with CVD such as high blood levels of LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides or high cholesterol/HDL ratio. "We see CardiaBeat™ as a new concept to the heart health related dietary supplements market, which we can describe as Total Lipid Management", concludes Dr. Pelled.

CardiaBeat™ , with its proprietary combination of natural active lipids, can also serve as a platform for other essential nutrients important for diabetes or CVD management. It can be applied in a variety of formulations and applications including dietary supplements, nutrition bars, and a variety of functional foods and beverages.

Enzymotec Targets South-East Asia Functional Oils Market

[03,2005]  Following the exciting clinical results of CardiaBeat™ obtained from Professor Peter Johns' human study and complimentary trials on weight management and diabetes, Enzymotec declares its intention to penetrate the functional oils market in South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions.

Nowadays, the South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions suffer from an increasing occurrence of obesity, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. According to the World Health Organization there are more than 82M diabetics in those regions, and the amount is expected to increase to 290M by 2030.
This growth is related to changes in nutrition habits; characterized by decreased consumption of traditional and healthy diet, based on sea food, rice, fruits, vegetables, and by an increased tendency towards western diet.

"Contrary to western health perception, the consumers do not perceive cooking oils as unhealthy. Moreover, cooking oils are an essential part of their diet", explains Mrs. Michal Haim-Bravman, Enzymotec's South East Asia and Western Pacific marketing manager. "Being an integral part of their diet, oil can easily become an ideal delivery platform for healthy ingredients, especially for addressing heart-obesity-diabetes concerns that need daily attention. CardiaBeat™ can transform any cooking oil like: palm, soybean or corn into a functional oil that meets the consumer preferences and helps him to maintain a healthy lifestyle without compromising taste or texture" concludes Mrs. Michal Haim-Bravman.

Recent clinical evidence suggests that CardiaBeat™, by Enzymotec, showed significantly superior effects on the body's total lipid profile, by lowering the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and oxidative stress, in comparison to other oils and supplements available on the market.  Following these results and in response to health trends, Enzymotec have already started a trial in the fields of obesity and weight management; a second human study in the field of diabetes is expected soon.

Enzymotec announces of a new solution for children cognitive development

[11,2005]  Enzymotec had recently developed a natural DHA-delivery system capable of significant improvement of DHA availability to the brain, which is especially important at young age.
"We see a surge of foods and supplements promoting DHA-containing nutrients for its effect on brain function.  Now, the market can enjoy a much better performance", says company spokesman.

"This vehicle, originated from natural source, exists in our body as well as our everyday foods .  Interestingly, its metabolic fate favors DHA uptake by the brain", says Dr. Dori Pelled, director of clinical studies at Enzymotec.

Several factors took part in creating this business segment: i) DHA is an essential fatty acid for the growth and functional development of the infant brain and is also required for the maintenance of normal brain function in adults. ii) Consumption of DHA in infant formulas was shown to facilitate favorable mental development and visual acuity.  iii) Growing body of evidence associates insufficient DHA consumption with increased risk for impaired cognitive performance and even psychiatric disorders.  Recent figures estimate US retail Kids' supplements sales with an annual turnover of over 100 M$/Y.  Other surveys revealed that more than 30% of the US children are consuming  vitamins and minerals enriched diet.  This suggests high level of public awareness for the importance of balanced nutrition at early age.
"Given the fact that there are approx. 80 million children aged 5-18 in the US, there is no doubt that the kids' supplements market is far from meeting its potential." Concludes Dr. Pelled.

Enzymotec announces on a new DHA-based supplement development

[09,2005]   Enzymotec announces today that its scientists were able to develop a new DHA-delivery system, capable of improving DHA bio-availability.

"We were able to produce a DHA-rich phospholipid conjugate, which mimics the natural form of DHA found in important body tissues such as the brain or the liver and is capable of ensuring of a better delivery of DHA",  sais Dr. Tzafra Cohen, head of technology department.
"DHA becomes more and more recognized as an effective supplement for the prevention of some of the risk factors associated with CVD and also for cognitive improvement or maintenance. One of today's challenges is to deliver DHA cost effectively and improve its efficacy, while overcoming taste and stability limitations, which are currently associated with DHA.
We believe we have been able to bring to the market a fresh approach, which makes use of phospholipids as DHA carriers that ensure the effective targeting of DHA  and subsequently improving its efficacy and known health benefits." concludes, Dr. Cohen..

Earlier this year Enzymotec has concluded an animal and human study on a proprietary structured derivative of the DHA-phospholipid system, exhibiting a better DHA availability over fish DHA or mixtures of DHA and phospholipids and consequently a superior biological effect, thus supporting past scientific literature and the benefits of using advanced DHA delivery systems.

Enzymotec, the advanced lipid nutrition company, is the developer and producer of CardiaBeat™ for CVD prevention, Sharp●PS™ for cognitive enhancement, and InFat™ for better Calcium and energy absorptions as well as easy digestion for infants.

Enzymotec gains GRAS from CardiaBeatTM   in the US

[11,2005]  CardiaBeat™, an advanced sterol-based ingredient, has recently gained a GRAS approval by an expert panel, allowing its use in a wide variety of food applications.

"We have now successfully concluded with the assistance of CANTOX the rigorous process which allowes the distribution of CardiaBeat™ in the US.", says company spokesman.

CardiaBeat™ by Enzymotec is an exclusive, patent-protected ingredient, capable of replacing the fat fraction within a wide range of food applications such as: yogurts, spreads or bars. "It is capable of lowering "bad' cholesterol together with addressing additional CVD risk factors, which standard plant sterols do not" says Dr. Ariel Katz, Enzymotec's CEO. "In the last 3 years we have performed 7 clinical trials in both animals and humans to establish its unique health benefits and advantages over conventional approaches".

Thus, products containing CardiaBeat™ could claim for cholesterol or CVD risk reduction, based on phytosterol-content, while unique positioning and brand expansion could also be based on its capacity to simultaneously reduce additional CVD risk factors. We have successfully implemented CardiaBeat™ in several food applications and are confident that it will soon find its way to American shelf-products.  Our strategy is to continue and support its growth through expanding its health benefits", concludes Dr. Katz.

Enzymotec's advanced active ingredients' portfolio is aimed to deliver advanced nutritional solutions within the areas of cognition, CVD and infant development.  Leading product categories include: CardiaBeat™, Sharp●PS™ – High quality phosphatidylserine brain booster for supplements and foods and InFat - a specialty fat, mimicking mother's milk fat structure and function to increase Calcium and energy absorbance.
